This spring, YSL has released a stunning new collector eyeshadow palette called Ombres de Jour ($60 for 0.18oz/5g) with the Désir de Jour Collection. It comes in the new Couture Palette format (previous palettes in the line reviewed here, here and here) which was introduced last summer and has fantastic pigmentation and lasting power. It's a little different than what I am usually drawn to. It's a palette of warm, buttery neutrals, highlighted by a pink and anchored by a deep black.

Ombres de Jour is a mix of warm and cool shades. It comes encased in a gold compact with a light orchid pink glittery cover and a strip of black satin down the center that has the YSL logo on it. All the shades have some shimmer to them. It's an edgy, non-neutral, neutral palette. The shades include:
  • A soft, cool, iridescent pastel yellow with pink and gold shimmer and sparkle. It shifts color like a duochrome
  • A bright, light medium, cool, bubblegum pink satin with extremely faint shimmer
  • A velvety, medium, warm, chocolate brown with very fine gold and pink shimmer
  • A plush, light medium, warm, camel brown satin with sparse, insubstantial pink and gold shimmer
  • A dark, sooty, black matte with fuchsia pink and indigo sparkles

The shadows in Ombres de Jour are smooth and creamy with a rich, silken texture - with the exception of the black. I found the black to be quite dry and powdery, and is best used as a liner shade. The rest of the shades cling well to the lids - with or without primer - and are easy to layer and blend. There is a tiny bit of fallout, the most coming from the black. When I've worn Ombres de Jour, the shadows have lasted all day on me over primer, without any fading or creasing.

Ombres de Jour is one of the loveliest eye palettes I've seen for spring. The pink is bright and vivid - it stands out it and doesn't give you that feared "pink eye look". It's a way to wear pink for spring. The colors work together to create a fresh, stylish neutral look with a twist. If you're looking for an unusual palette for spring, I highly recommend checking out Ombres de Jour.

I purchased Ombres de Jour from Neiman Marcus. It is also available from Bloomingdale's and Saks

Have you picked up anything from YSL's spring collection? Would you wear hot pink eyeshadow?

  1. Hey Jenny, so lovely to see this pop up!! I didn't want to buy anymore YSL but you're right about this being one of the loveliest palettes this season! I didn't have much difficulty using the black on the outer third of my lid but the pink doesn't show up on me :( but it is interesting with the bronze and beige!

  2. Thats very pretty, I've found the two
Couture palettes I have blend out too easily so the shades all seem to merge, but wonder if these ones would go on more distinct.
I've not seen the highlighter from the Spring range in person yet but know someone who did and she said its a lot paler than the promo, not as pink, and have some silver sparkle in it, so I think I can safely skip that one.
The new 10 pan Couture Variation Paletts coming out later this month look interesting so am sure I'll have to pick up the nude one when it comes out x

  3. Beautiful colors! But really, what takes the cake is that incredible case! That is so opulent and pretty. Girly, too.

  4. Hi Linda,
YSL is slowly becoming one of my favorite brands, though I tend to be very picky in what I choose to pickup from their releases. It's really unusual (and a shame) that the pink doesn't show up on you. Even without the pink, the palette is still really beautiful - both of the browns are spectacular and the highlighter shade is so pretty.

  5. Hi Clare,
Of the Couture Palettes that I have, I usually only find that happening with #2 Fauves - with the rest there is enough difference for the shades to be distinct. The highlighter isn't being released here, but I was planning on skipping it. I saw a swatch of it, and it didn't seem worth it. The Couture Variation Palettes look fabulous - I really hope they are released here. I'd love to pick up the nude one too.

  6. Hi Belly,
The case is stunning! YSL has certainly been paying attention to their packaging. The past few releases have had gorgeous cases that coordinated beautifully with the shadows and the overall theme.

  7. Hi Ebru,
The pink does work as a blush! I've tried it that way a few times. It gives the face this beautiful, subtle pop of color. It works a lot better if you use a smaller blush brush, otherwise the bristles will overlap and go into a different color.

  8. It looks so beautiful. Can't wait to get mine!

I have ordered from a shop outside EU so probably it will take longer.

  9. Hi Sara,
I had a feeling you would like it. The first time I saw it, Ombres de Jour reminded me of Suqqu EX-16. I hope when you review it you can compare the two. I'd love to see how close they actually are.
