Facial oils are having a moment. In the past, oils were a considered a big no-no, but they've been gaining ground over the past few years as more options have become available. Probably the biggest misconception is that oils are only good for those with dry skin, when in fact oils are beneficial for oily and acne-prone skin as well. Facial oils can be used alone or in combination with another moisturizer.

I prefer using oils now because lotions and creams never felt right on my skin. My skin would usually end up feeling weighed down and greasy - like my skin couldn't breathe. If I did happen to find one that I liked, it would only work for a little while before it would start to feel the same as all the others. I later learned that's because lotions and creams are primarily made up of waxes and water, with a few oils added in. The waxes help hold moisture in, but mostly they can clog pores and block the nourishing ingredients in the product from passing through into the skin.

Three of my favorite oils all contain some form of rose, either rose essential oil or rosehip seed oil. The biggest difference between the two is the origin of the oils. Rosehip oil is harvested from the seeds of rose bushes, while rose essential oil comes from rose petals. Rose extracts are showing up a lot more recently in skin care products due to all the favorable characteristics. Some of the benefits of rose oils include:
  • Rose essential oil contains vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and has excellent emollient properties for moisturizing dry skin.
  • It also has antiseptic and astringent properties, as well as anti-inflammatory properties that help treat acneic skin, redness and inflammation.
  • Rose oil can help refine skin texture and help alleviate psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.
  • Rose essential oil also contains aromatherapy properties that calm and soothe.
  • Rosehip oil includes high levels of vitamin C and essential fatty acids, which helps keep skin soft and moisturized.
  • The vitamin A (retinol) in Rosehip oil is known to promote healthy skin cell rejuvenation and helps treat fine lines and wrinkles and other visible signs of aging.
  • Rosehip oil has been shown to inhibit pigmentation.
  • Rosehip oil is nourishing and calms and moisturizes the skin.
  • Dabbing a bit of rosehip oil on your nails and cuticles will nourish and hydrate brittle nails, prevent hangnails and protects against nail breakage.

The first oil I picked up was the ila Face Oil For Glowing Radiance ($118 for 1oz/30mL). Known as ila's "little miracle", this oil is a best selling cult product for it's ability to transform dull or devitalized skin, giving it a lit-from-within glow. Added to the argan oil base is, rosehip oil, sandalwood and damascene rose otto to fight wrinkles, heal scar tissue, reverse aging, regenerate skin cells, rejuvenate and nourish and give the skin a natural glow. The oil is a golden yellow in color and has a strong, uninhibited scent of rose. Be forewarned, the scent may be a little too pungent for some. The consistency is a bit thicker and heavier than some other oils I've tried, though it's still feels lightweight on the skin. It sinks instantly, leaving no greasy, filmy residue behind. My skin is left satiny, moisturized and luminous. It comes in a white glass bottle with a plastic pump button dropper (which is ingenious really), which lets you easily control how much you get. It is 100% natural, vegan, gluten and cruelty free.

Shortly after I picked up ila's Face Oil For Glowing Radiance, I purchased Mun No.1 Aknari Brightening Youth Serum ($95 for 0.68fl. oz./20mL), a gentle, restorative, anti-aging serum. I picked up my third bottle earlier this year, right before they released a new reformulated version. The formula was tweaked a bit, to allow daytime and nighttime use. The size was increased (from my 0.5fl. oz), though the price remained the same. Needless to say, I will be picking up a bottle of the new version as soon as I'm through with my current one. The No.1 Aknari Serum contains only three ingredients: Argan oil, Prickly Pear Seed Oil (which is also known as Barbary Fig Oil, one of the rarest and most expensive oils in the world) and Rose Oil. It nourishes, softens and smooths the skin and targets fine lines and wrinkles, while toning and brightening the complexion. The serum is a pale, almost transparent greenish yellow and has a soft, fruity rose scent. It's a fairly lightweight oil, with a satiny viscosity, that quickly penetrates into the skin. My skin is soft, hydrated and revitalized. It's packaged in a dark violet Miron glass bottle, which protects the product inside from UVA and UVB rays, with a pump applicator. Over time, it helps fade hyperpigmentation and fine lines. It's made with certified organic ingredients, 100% natural, vegan, gluten and cruelty free.

May Lindstrom's The Youth Dew ($120 for 0.68fl. oz./20mL) is an oil I was really curious about, but was a little scared to try. I was worried that it would be too rich and heavy for my combination/acne-prone skin. It's actually a good all-around, everyday, any-time kind of oil and the one I tend to reach for the most. It contains twenty plant and botanical oils, such as meadowform seed oil, avocado oil, jojoba oil, rosehip oil and olive oil along with CoEnzyme Q10. The Youth Dew hydrates, softens, soothes, heals, and protects the skin, while stimulating collagen production, preventing premature aging and UV damage from the sun, improving uneven skin tone, and balancing out pores. The oil is a bright golden orange in color and it almost seems to have a subtle golden shimmer to it as well. It has a beautiful citrusy rose scent, that is subtle enough to not offend those with sensitive noses. It's a seemingly weightless oil, with a rapid absorption rate, that feels silky and luxurious to the touch. It leaves my skin smooth, calm and renewed. It's packaged in a bottle similar to the Mun Aknari No.1, in a Miron glass pump bottle. It's so good you will want to use this everywhere - your face, your hands, your hair. May Lindstrom products are crafted in small handmade batches to ensure freshness. It's 100% Vegan, made from certified organic and wild harvested ingredients.

Since I've replaced traditional moisturizers with facial oils, my skin is clearer, more balanced and softer. It has a more even tone and texture and a soft, luminous glow that it didn't have before. I've found that I don't need to add any other moisturizers on top, except when winter is the harshest. I simply pump a little oil into my hand, rub my hands together lightly, then apply to damp skin (over toner) and gently massage the oil into my skin. While the prices of the oils may seem high, you really only use a tiny bit at a time - just a few drops - so, a small bottle of oil will last you a lot longer than you might think (bottles of oil have lasted me anywhere from six months to a year, depending on how often I use them). Each of these oils are useful for targeting different skincare issues and have earned a place in my permanent skincare routine. If you're new to facial oils, any of these oils is a good place to start.

The ila Face Oil For Glowing Radiance is available at Spirit Beauty Lounge, Dermstore, Net-A-Porter, Space.NK and Beautyhabit. The Mun No.1 Aknari Brightening Youth Serum is available at Spirit Beauty Lounge, Epic Beauty Bar, Beautyhabit and MUN. MUNSkin.com has a 20% off discount until the end of the year. The May Lindstrom The Youth Dew is available at Spirit Beauty Lounge, Epic Beauty Bar, Beautyhabit, CAP Beauty, Embody and May Lindstrom Skin.

Have you used a facial oil before? Do you have a favorite oil you think I should try?

    1. Oh squeeee I love oils AND roses, so I'm not ashamed to admit I drooled a little reading this post! I've never tried any of these, but now I really want to hunt them down! Some of the rose oils I've tried and liked include... Estelle & Thild Rose Otto Face Oil, Sisley Black Rose Precious Face Oil, and bodhi & birch Desert Rose Rejuvenating Face Oil :)

    2. Hey Sunny,
I know, aren't face oils simply wonderful??? There are so many on my wishlist right now - particularly de Mamiel's Seasonal Oils. I've heard a lot of good things about Sisley's new oil - I haven't heard of the other two. I'll have to look them up. Thanks for the recommendations!

    3. i am finding that the damasca rose ingredient really agrees with my skin. I tried a sample of that ila oil and it is quite nice! I want to get aesop's rose treatment first (less expensive) but Ila is definitely on my list!

    4. Hi Joyce,
I haven't tried many Aesop products - though they've been on my list. The Ila oil seems expensive, but it's really not. For how much you use at one time, it will last you quite a long time - longer than you would expect. It's an investment, but once you find an oil that you love - you'll think nothing of the price. Definitely try to get samples of the other two oils. Spirit Beauty Lounge has a really nice sampling program (you pick six samples for $25/free shipping/$5 bounce back gift certificate) that lets you try a whole bunch of different products. And if you follow (email, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter) a lot of the stores I listed above, they will periodically send out coupons/coupon codes - which is another way to save.

    5. Spirit Beauty is where I got the sample from :) It came with a purchase hehe! I tried that sampling program once, and I think it is so great that they do it. I would like to do it again, but have just felt so overwhelmed by all the things hanging around in the stash. Did it used to be 9 samples at one point? At any rate, I think you are right! I just have moments of reason/practicality when i can't bear to spend too much when I have perfectly usable stuff around. (Which is probably a good thing?? LOL!)

    6. I have SO many samples and I usually forget to use them, lol. It did used to be nine samples, but they lowered it to six so they could keep the program going. De Mamiel is another really great brand I've tried (I haven't purchased anything of theirs yet though) They different facial oils for each season. They are each geared towards helping/protecting for different things. I've tried a couple of them and they are the best oils I've ever used, hands down. But I just can't bring myself to spend the money when I have so many oils already - so I know how you feel.

    7. oo i'll keep my eye out for that brand! that sounds really nice! Makes sense minimizing the samples too... Yeah, I usually forget to use my samples too, but I've been doing better purging them and trying to use them too. i am realizing how much of a waste it is to just waste them! :/
