Chanel Melba Rouge Coco Shine, Aqualumière Gloss Friandise and French Toffee, Swatches and Review

After picking up Convoitise, I was undecided if I wanted to get anything else from the Collection Les Délices de Chanel Collection. I have the hardest time making up my mind--I'm terrible, really. After seeing CharlestonGirl's review at Best Things in Beauty, wanted some of the lippies--but then I was like no--"be good and save your money for Superstition, you know that's coming out soon." But then I saw that the Aqualumières had already sold out from Saks--and I caved. I was pretty good though--I didn't buy them all, lol.

Melba 75 Rouge Coco Shine ($32.50 for 0.1oz/3g) is a "peachy, apricot beige."

I think I was most excited to get Melba out of all the Les Délices lippies I ordered. I'm really into more toned down lipsticks and glosses right now--like pinky peaches and nudes--and I thought Melba looked absolutely perfect.

After I took pictures of Melba, I was so excited to try it. It looks so light and sweet. In fact, I think it's name even means Peach Sugar. It looks like it'll make for the ultimate nude lipstick. Until you go and put it on. I saw nothing. And when I say nothing--I mean absolutely, no color whatsoever. Just a little shine, but that's about it. Well--it might have lightened my lips a tiny bit. But I don't know about you--but I don't want my lips to be lighter than my skin. I so wish the color payoff had been what it is in the swatch. I had skipped Gourmandise based on CharlestonGirl's swatches of it--and I wish I had skipped this too.

Friandise 82 Aqualumière Gloss ($27 for 0.20fl.oz/6mL) is a "bright pink with metallic luster."

I wasn't sure about Friandise. Bright colors don't always look right on me. But I'm so glad to have gotten it. It's a dazzling, warm toned pink, with iridescent luster.

Friandise instantly reminded me of Coral Wizz Gloss d'Enfer Maxi Shine from Guerlain--my most beloved lip gloss--at least for right now.

After swatching them, I noticed that they didn't seem as similar as I had thought. Friandise is much warmer--more of a rose pink, with a faint hint of orange. While Coral Wizz, is a bright, cool toned pink. Though, when worn, they are actually really quite similar. They both create the most beautiful peachy pink lip. The main difference is the amount of shimmer--Friandise has a lot more than Coral Wizz. Friandise has a lot more sheen and sparkle in it. They both have the most amazing texture--light as air. I forget that I am wearing them.

French Toffee 83 Aqualumière Gloss ($27 for 0.20fl.oz/6mL) is a "gold copper with glitter."

When I couldn't decide between Friandise and French Toffee--I decided to just get both. After swatching it, I kinda wish I hadn't. While, it's not as disappointing as Melba--it's super sheer. It's basically clear with some subtle glitter.

Out of the these three, I'd say that Melba is a definite pass. I so wanted to love it. And I was crushed when I tried it. (At least I have my Superstition haul to cheer me up). The Aqualumière Gloss formula is fantastic--"water-light, mirror-like shine, a precision brush applicator"--it's a shame the line was discontinued. So, if you are a die-hard fan of the line and miss them, I would say pick up both--otherwise--just get Friandise. It's totally worth the splurge.

Melba, Friandise and French Toffee are all Limited Edtions and available at Chanel.

  1. Thanks very much for the review Jenny. I was wondering why the packaging was looking like the old line, it is interesting that they released shades from a discontinued product. I love Friandise from your swatches, I should check it out :-)

    1. Hey Sara--You definitely should. Friandise is simply stunning. Both the Aqualumieres were available at Saks--but the sold out so fast. So I would check it out fast!
